microbes "eat" the spill in Gulf of Mexico
The organism is reproducing rapidly in the area where spilled millions of gallons of crude oil but not much depleted oxygen in the water, scientists reveal.
Scientists recently discovered a type of oil-eating microbe that reproduces rapidly in the Gulf of Mexico where millions of gallons of spilled oil. The organism was found while studying the scattering of underwater petrole which is in the area and found that not much depleted the oxygen in the water.
"Our results, which provide for the first time data on microbial activity in deep water in a column of oil dispersion, suggest" a great potential for bacteria to help break the high crude sea, Hazen said in a statement.
The revelations were made on Tuesday in the online journal Sciencexpress. Researchers are directed by Terry Hazen at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California.
